Short answer: sometimes, yes. If you have a ground-mount system, softened water, and a free Saturday morning, you can clean your own panels — and we'll tell you exactly how to do it right, further down. But if the plan is to stand in the driveway and blast a rooftop array with the garden hose, we'd like a word first. Not because it threatens our business. Because in this particular valley, with this particular water, that plan often leaves panels worse than it found them.

The hard-water problem nobody warns you about

Most of the Coachella Valley drinks from wells, and that water comes up carrying a serious mineral load. The local water agencies' own quality reports put much of the valley in the "hard" to "very hard" range — commonly cited figures run from around 8 grains per gallon to 17 and beyond, depending on which wells feed your street. It's the same water that whitens shower doors in La Quinta Cove and crusts up any window that catches sprinkler overspray in Rancho Mirage.

Now put that water on a solar panel in Indio in June. The glass is well over 100 degrees and the humidity is in the single digits, so every drop flashes off in a minute or two and leaves its minerals behind as a faint white film. Here's the part that stings: dust at least blows around and rinses off, but mineral scale bonds to hot glass and builds a little more with every hose-down. Rinse a dusty array weekly all summer and you can end up with a hazy, spotted surface that scatters light all day, every day — a semi-permanent version of the problem you were trying to fix. The scratch problem

Solar glass isn't just glass — most modern panels ship with an anti-reflective coating that squeezes a few extra percent of light into the cells. Desert grit is largely quartz, which is harder than that coating and hard enough to mark the glass itself. Drag a dry towel, a shop brush, or a squeegee across a dusty panel and you're not wiping it; you're sanding it with the very particles you meant to remove. Fine scratches scatter light permanently, and unlike dirt, no cleaning ever gets that production back. The rule is simple: nothing touches dry, dirty glass. Water first, always, and only soft bristles designed for the job.

The ladder is the real cost

We'd be doing you a disservice if we let the water chemistry bury the lede. The most expensive thing about DIY panel cleaning isn't spotting — it's the roof. Valley homes stack the deck against you: brittle clay and concrete tile that cracks underfoot and slides when it does, two-story builds in Bermuda Dunes and north Indio, steep architectural pitches in the newer developments, and surfaces that are literally too hot to touch for a good chunk of the year. Falls from ladders and roofs remain one of the most common ways homeowners get seriously hurt doing routine maintenance, and no monthly electric bill savings pencil out against an ER visit. If your array requires a ladder, that alone is a good reason to make it someone else's ladder — someone insured for it.

When DIY is genuinely fine

Fair is fair — plenty of setups don't need us. If you can check every box below, go for it with our blessing:

  1. Safe access. Ground mount, low carport, or panels reachable with a pole from the ground. No ladders, no roof walking.
  2. Good water. A home softener helps, but the gold standard is an inline DI or spot-free rinse filter on the hose — they're inexpensive and they solve the mineral problem outright.
  3. Cool glass. Early morning, before the sun does its work. Never midday.
  4. Soft tools only. A soft-bristle brush made for solar or auto glass, plain water, no soap, no abrasives, and absolutely nothing on dry glass.
  5. Power awareness. You're wetting an electrical system — stay off anything with visibly damaged wiring or cracked glass, and don't spray connectors directly.

One more honest tip: check your monitoring app before and after. It's the only way to know whether the effort earned its keep — and if a careful DIY rinse barely moved the needle, that's often a sign the film on the glass is mineral or baked mud rather than loose dust, which is exactly when it's time to call us.
