Indio and Coachella are two of the fastest-growing cities in the Coachella Valley, and you can read the growth right off the rooftops: block after block of newer tract homes across north Indio and rising subdivisions in Coachella, most of them built with solar already on the roof. Smart setup in a place with this much sun. It also comes with a catch nobody mentions at closing — this is the dustiest end of the valley, and a solar array here gets dirty on a schedule you can almost circle on a calendar.

Dust, droppings, hard water — and the light rain that bakes it all on

Dust is only the first ingredient. Doves and pigeons treat rooftop panels as shade structures, and their droppings don't just block light — a dropping fully shades the cell beneath it, which can force that one cell to run hot while the rest of the panel produces. Those hot spots stress cells over time. It's the difference between a dirty windshield and a chipped one.

Then there's the water. CVWD's own quality reports put local tap hardness squarely in the hard range, so a well-intentioned garden-hose rinse dries into white mineral spotting — trading dust for baked-on scale.

And the sneakiest ingredient: light rain. A real storm rinses panels. A ten-minute sprinkle wets the dust, turns it to mud, and lets the desert sun fire it on. Soiling researchers, including NREL's, call this cementation — once dust is cemented to glass, wind won't take it and the next sprinkle won't either. What dirty panels cost — the honest ranges

We don't invent numbers. NREL estimates typical soiling losses around 5% of production, ranging up to roughly 25% in parts of California, and field studies in the desert Southwest commonly cite losses of 7–30% or more after dust events when arrays go uncleaned. Instrument studies in desert climates have measured soiling stacking up at several tenths of a percent of production per day through dry, dusty stretches — and Indio and Coachella have long dry, dusty stretches.

Builder solar and leases: clean panels still matter

A lot of newer homes here — around Terra Lago, Shadow Hills, and the subdivisions filling in across Coachella — came with builder-installed solar, often under a lease or power-purchase agreement. Two things are worth knowing:

  1. Your lease payment doesn't care how dirty the panels are. You pay the same every month whether the array is spotless or mud-glazed. The only way the system pays you back is by producing.
  2. Performance guarantees assume upkeep. Many solar leases and warranties expect reasonable maintenance, and some put cleaning explicitly on the homeowner — it's worth reading yours. Clean panels (plus the annual Panel Patrol drone photos our members get from an FAA Part 107 licensed operator) mean that if production ever falls short, the conversation is about the equipment, not the dirt.

"IID power is cheap — is cleaning still worth it?"

Fair question, and we'll answer it straight. Imperial Irrigation District rates are among the lowest in Southern California — meaningfully cheaper than what Southern California Edison charges in the central valley. That means each kilowatt-hour a dirty panel fails to make costs you less here than it would in Rancho Mirage, and a cleaning takes longer to pay for itself in pure billing terms.

How we clean

Deionized water through a water-fed pole, soft brushes made for solar glass, no soap, no pressure washer, and early-morning starts so we're touching cool glass instead of a panel that's been broiling since sunrise. Pure water dries spotless — no squeegee, no hard-water trade — and soft bristles protect the coatings that help panels perform. Ground mounts and carports, common out here, are quicker for us to reach, so they're discounted; a standard one-time cleaning runs $199 for up to 20 panels, plus $4 per panel after that, with $29 added for steep or two-story roofs.
